Affiliate Tutorial - Tweak your site (Final Steps 16 - 18)

STEP 16: Tweak your site

To boost your conversion rate (your visitor-to-sales ratio), try little experiments, one thing at a time.
Try changing the heading on a page, the words, the colors, the placement of your links. With each change wait until about 1,000 visitors have seen the change, and monitor your affiliate commissions to see if they rise or fall.
You do this because you understand that if 1% of your visitors are buying and tiny changes boost your success rate to 2%, you'll DOUBLE your commissions.

STEP 17: The future

When you reach your goal of $300 a month, you wonder whether you should expand your site, perhaps adding a newsletter, an autoresponder course or two, a forum, RSS newsfeeds, a blog, a whitepaper, a report to sell ... and turn it into a portal. You dream big. Perhaps you even start dreaming of having your own affiliates promoting your reports for you...
Or perhaps you just research another little overlooked niche and start on your next simple little, low-maintenance money-generating site.

It can be done. The main ingredient needed is persistence. Been there, done that, and I have a very nice lifestyle to prove it.

The $300 a month target is very conservative. If that's all you earn, you've done something "wrong". You haven't chosen profitable keywords carefully enough, you haven't built enough attractive, keyword-rich pages, you haven't learned the basics of optimizing pages for search engines, or you haven't attracted enough good quality links to your site.
That's the wonderful thing about this business. You can make lots of mistakes and still earn useful money. Just don't make TOO many mistakes.

STEP 18: Take the first step

That's the one that matters most.
I suggest you go back and read through this affiliate program tutorial again.
Picture yourself owning a successful online business. Picture yourself opening letters and finding checks in them. Picture yourself going into your PayPal account and seeing the latest commissions you've been paid by affiliate merchants.
Imagine enjoying yourself spending the money, perhaps even giving up your day job so that you can concentrate on your own business.
Now take the first step.
And when you've quit your day job, please write and tell me. I love getting emails like that.

STEP 14: Expect to see signs of success.

Eventually, because of all the links to your site on other sites, Google, Yahoo! and MSN will find your site and start sending you traffic.
Perhaps around the three-month or four-month stage you'll be receiving 100 visitors a day. Visitors will like what they see and some site owners will start linking to you and asking you to link to them.
Keep at it. You're just getting warmed up.

STEP 15: The payoff...

About six months down the road, after little expense but quite a lot of hard work and research, you hit your magical $300 a month mark, from affiliate sales and from AdSense ads on your site.
Depending on the niche you've chosen and the skills you've learned, you might earn considerably more than $300.

Perhaps after 12 months, you'll be earning $500 to $1,000 a month from your site.
The checks keep coming in, month after month, even when you take a little vacation. You start telling friends how easy affiliate marketing is, and are puzzled when they're not convinced.
Of course, it's not really easy. It just seems easy after you've done the hard work.
...or the NON-payoff

If you've merely scanned the instruction manual and jumped right in without doing any research and built a "Make Money on the Internet" site, you'll probably earn very little. A search on Google for "make money" displays more than 4 million pages. If one of those is yours, you have a LOT of competition.

If you did this and it isn't working for you, go back to step 1 and start again.

Affiliate Tutorial (Step 16 - 18 ) - Tweak site to make even more money

Affiliate Tutorial - Place articles on websites (Step 11 - 13)

STEP 11: Place your articles on other websites

Write articles and distribute them to article directories (fairly easy) and try to persuade newsletters and other sites to publish them (more challenging.
This step isn't absolutely essential, but it helps enormously if you do it. Now you understand why it was so important that you chose a topic that was easy to write about.

STEP 12: Add more pages and get more links.

Keep adding useful, interesting, keyword-rich pages (you do research at Wordtracker for this) and keep encouraging more sites to link to your site.
Make friends with other web site owners, and more people will link to you...

STEP 13: Be patient.

If your new site is typical, nothing much will seem to happen for the first couple of months or so, and you'll probably become frustrated and find it hard to believe that this is going to work.
You're likely to feel annoyed, cheated and ready to quit. You're likely to be a prime target for people selling get-rich-quick junk.
Many affiliates give up at this stage. Stick with it. If you're persistent and get the details right, the process I'm describing works beautifully.
Learn something new every day. Do something to improve your business every day. If you do this, success is inevitable. My Funny videos blog Oraclevid Funny Videos took a while to pick up and now it gets over 400 hits a day in just a few weeks.

Affiliate Tutorial - Good links to your site (Step 8 - 10)

STEP 8: Get good quality links to your site

Without links to your site, your site won't be found in the search engines. So you MUST get links to your site, if possible from "authority" sites - ones that have lots of links to them.
First, link to other sites. Choose sites that have similar or related themes, and invite those sites to link to you.

This is hugely important. Search engines love sites that have many links to them - especially if those links come from sites which are themselves popular.
Now you see why I said build a useful, interesting site. If you do that, people are more likely to link to your site.
Here's an article I wrote describing how to get reciprocal links.
Reciprocal links should be only a small part of your marketing strategy - not your whole marketing strategy.
Even better than reciprocal links are one-way links. Here's an article describing how to get one-way links.
Some of these one-way links techniques are fairly advanced and require considerable work. Most of your competitors will be too lazy to do them, so you'll have a big advantage if you do. They can make the difference between a hobby site and a serious, very profitable business.

STEP 9: Anchor text

You'll also need to understand the importance of anchor text, the words you use to link to pages on your site, the words people use when they link to your site.
To search engines, anchor text is very important.

STEP 10: List your site in major directories and niche directories in your industry.

You probably already know about Yahoo! (good but expensive) and DMOZ (often takes months to get into).

Here are some more directories (some charge a fee):

Looksmart (probably too expensive)
Best of the Web

Guides to web directories
David Mahler has a Guide to Web Directories. It's a good list of recommended web directories.
Here's another list: http://www.strongestlinks.com/directories.php

How to find niche directories:
Go to Search It! (It's a very handy free research tool.)
Scroll to the Search Category, "Specialty Hubs and Directories"
Choose one of the 4 options in STEP 2
Read the "Click Here for Information..." help before proceeding
Complete STEPS 3 and 4, and then click on Search It!
Read the tutorial. It tells you what to do with the search results
Get your search results. You should be able to find relevant, themed hub sites and directories which will list your site. Some charge a fee, some are free.

Affiliate Tutorial - Affiliate links (Step 6-7)

STEP 6: Add affiliate links

As you write the articles for your site, weave affiliate links into them. Always have a typical visitor in mind as you write the articles. Speak to that visitor.
Your task as an affiliate is to help your visitor decide what to buy.
One successful technique is to gradually lead your visitor towards a purchase. Start by outlining a problem, discuss a good solution that has worked for you, and end the article with a link that is a call to action, such as a hyperlink that says, "Find out more here."
Your task as an affiliate is NOT to sell (that's the merchant's job) but to presell, to warm up your visitors. You want your visitors in a ready-to-buy frame of mind when they arrive at the merchant's site.

For superb advice on preselling, I strongly recommend you join Ken Evoy's 5 Pillar Affiliate Program. It's free to join.

Ken is an absolute whiz at preselling and he's renowned for working extremely hard to help his affiliates succeed. He has a superb program. It's been No.1 in my Top 10 for several years. I earn five-figure monthly commissions from this affiliate program.

STEP 7: Place AdSense ads on your site

If you have a good, popular site, it's remarkably easy to make good money with Google AdSense. AdSense is free to join.

Here's an excellent free Google Adsense Tutorial.

Affiliate Program Tutorial: (Step 4-5)

STEP: 4. Research affiliate merchants

Before you make a firm decision on a topic for your site, you'll need to do research to see if there are suitable affiliate products which match your topic.
You want affiliate merchants that have excellent products, excellent reputations and sites that look as though they're good at selling. You can search the AssociatePrograms.com affiliate directory for ideas.

Consider aiming for lifetime commissions.
If you're lucky, you'll manage to select a web site topic that has affiliate programs which pay lifetime commissions or residual commissions - the sort reviewed at LifetimeCommissions.com.
You'll earn repeat commissions when "your" customers make more purchases

Affiliate Marketing

STEP 5: Build a useful, interesting website on your niche

Here's an very important step. Many newcomer affiliates who fail do so because they have overlooked its importance.
Don't just build a website. Build a useful, interesting website on your niche.
One of the best ways is to build a site which solves people's problems. Useful sites also often help their visitors decide which products to buy.
Create a content rich, keyword-rich site, designed to be found in search engines.
Show your personality. Have a bit of fun. Be memorable. You need to connect with your visitors. Remember that people like buying from people they like.
There's no space in this affiliate program tutorial to describe how to build a website. For that, you'll need a good instruction manual.
If you're short of money, you can hunt for free information on sites such HTMLGoodies.
You'll save yourself an enormous amount of time and frustration if you take the plunge and buy a good instruction manual.

Here are the two best options:

(1.) For keen do-it-your-selfers, I recommend Rosalind Gardner's Super Affiliate Handbook.
Rosalind is a real been-there-done-that super affiliate.

Her instruction manual shows you how she builds very successful sites using web authoring software.
It starts right at the beginning, discussing topics such as myths about doing business online, mistakes to avoid, how to choose the best topic, how to choose the right domain name, etc.
The book, updated in May 2006, takes you step-by-step through the whole process.
One particularly useful feature is her explanation of how she achieves high conversion rates (visitor-to-sales ratios), achieving conversion rates of 4% or 6% while most affiliates are happy with 1%.

Another of the strengths of the book is her descriptions of a wide variety of ways to get traffic to your site. This is important - too many affiliates rely on just one or two traffic-generating methods. The more traffic-generating methods you have, the safer your business is.
Rosaland is genuinely successful, generating hundreds of thousands of dollars a year. Now she's also a very successful author, with sales of more $1 million from her book, which is excellent value.

When you learn from her, you're learning from a winner.
Learn more about Rosalind's Super Affiliate Handbook here.
If you choose to follow Rosalind's advice, you'll also need a website-building tool. A very popular choice among affiliates is XSitePro, which is designed for people who want to build small, niche sites. XSitePro, or the new version, XSitePro2, isn't suitable for every type of site, so make sure you read our XSitePro2 review before you decide.(2.)

(2.) For affiliates who want to simplify things as much as possible and automate the tedious techie stuff, I recommend Ken Evoy's Site Build It (SBI).

SBI is a site-building, site-hosting, site-promoting suite of tools, all in one place.
Once you have SBI, you don't have to go scurrying all over the Net adding more tools and software. You have almost all you need in one package, so you can concentrate on the fun part - creating useful, interesting content.

SBI comes with a newly updated, truly comprehensive instruction manual, a step-by-step Action Guide, and a truly superb private forum where SBI users share information and help each other.
SBI is the tool I give my assistants. Take the Free Video Tourand you'll understand why.

Ken Evoy's instruction manual is doing my work for me. First it taught Rupert and then Ros how to build a high quality, successful, revenue-generating site. Now it's being used by another assistant to whom I outsource website maintenance.
You could build a site without SBI, but using it saves you time and effort by simplifying the process. It provides a recipe for business success.
SBI teaches you how to optimize your web pages so they'll be found in search engines. After building a page, you click the "Analyze It" button and it tells you what you need to do to improve it.

The SBI technique really works. Two of the SBI sites that Rupert built are included in the case studies on the SBI site.
See the proof in the SBI case studies

Top questions and review of Site Build It

Many people wonder how you can use Site Build It to make and design a money making website without any web building or programming experience. Here are some top questions that one of our affiliates, Nicole answered for us. I hope it would set your mind at ease.

#1 Can you explain simply how Site Build It works?

In a nutshell Site Build It is an online/download program that guides you step by step how to turn a hobby/passion/interest/…into an online business through building a website.
This is not just some software that you are left to follow on your own but it is a program whereby you are supported all the time by real people either in the forum or in the SBI headquarters. You are guided every step of the way.
-- Review of Site Build It! --

#2 How much does it cost?

It costs $299 USD per year. I've paid the same amount since I started in 2003! That works out at just under $1 USD per day. There are no extras to pay and no hidden costs.
-- Review of Site Build It! --

#3 Can anyone use Site Build It and do I need to already know how to build a website?

YES anyone can use Site Build It and NO you don't need to know anything at all about building a website. Of course it helps but is not obligatory.
I knew nothing when I started (remember I was on a dial up connection and could just about surf the internet).
Site Build It have an incredibly simple block by block website building system. They have stacks of templates which you can customize and they guide you the whole way. Of course if you want to make a more complicated website or use your own templates, they allow you to do that too!
-- Review of Site Build It! --

#4 How do you actually make money?

I wondered that too! There are 2 main ways:
Firstly you might sell a product (or service) that you own or make e.g. homemade jewellery, eBooks, graphic design, language translation. You will physically ship or provide a service.
Secondly you might sell a product/service that you don't own - this is what I do. In this case you join forces with a supplier (I joined forces with various party product suppliers) and then if I refer people to them who then go on to buy their products, I get a small percentage of the sale. This is called "Affiliate Marketing".
Don't get scared of that word as Site Build It will explain it all in a very simple way and walk you through the whole process.
There are other ways to earn as well such as by putting Google ads on your web pages or writing articles for other sites plus many more.
-- Review of Site Build It! --

#5 I have no idea what to build a website about. Can you suggest anything?

This is a question that I get asked all the time and I asked myself the same question when I started.
Don't worry though as Site Build It walk you through the whole process of how to choose something interesting and profitable to you.
For some examples here are some websites that other SBI'ers have built
-- Review of Site Build It! --

#6 How long did it take you to build your website?

I won't pretend that you can build it in a day or even a month. It takes time. Remember though you are not just building a website you are aiming to build a business, a business that earns you money.
Site Build It have what they call a "10 day" course to enable you to get your website up and running. Although they use the word 'day', a day sometimes took me several days or a week. It all depends how much time you can devote to it.
I started kids-partycabin in early 2003 and it took me about one month to put my up my first few pages but another 6 months before I felt I had a decent looking website.
I started my second website learn-french-today in 2007 and it was so much quicker to get going as I already had the experience behind me.
I never stop building them though as there is always something new to write about. I'm always thinking up new kids party games and or plotting and planning new kids party themes.
-- Review of Site Build It! --

#7 How much money do you earn a month?

The big question that everyone wants to know and quite rightly too! You want to know that your time and effort is paying off.
My first year on both my websites I earned nothing. Remember the first year you need to build the foundations of your business and this is hugely important. You need to research and plan – Site Build It shows you how to do all that.
The second year I earned double of my Site Build It fee and each year after that my income has doubled.
I now earn around $1200 per month on kids-partycabin.com and am just starting to earn on learn-french-today.com as that is just a year old.
Some people earn much more than me but they probably put in more time and effort. You put in what suits you.
-- Review of Site Build It! --

#8 How many hours do you work a day?

As I don't go out to work and my kids are no longer babies, I have more time than other work at home mums.
I probably spend about 4 hours a day at the computer but a lot of that time is spent gleaning information and tips off the Site Build It forum. Some days I don't work at all and other days I just answer emails.
-- Review of Site Build It! --

#9 What if I get stuck or I want my money back?

When I started 5 years ago, I relied on the Site Build support center - I had so many questions I wonder if they ever got fed up with me. They say not!
You are lucky though as recently they have set up a fantastic forum which is alive and throbbing with people like you and me, all trying to set up a web business. There are beginners and experts alike all asking every manner of questions. It really is the best forum I have come across.
Site Build It also have a 30 day 100% money back guarantee and after that you are refunded on a pro-rata basis, for whatever part of the year remains. Not bad at all compared to other programs.

#10 I am not sure if I am ready. Can I get some FREE stuff first?

There are lots of FREE Site Build It products. I love a freebie so definitely took advantage of them!
Below is a list of some of their free downloads so you don't need to commit to anything. I have only listed the ones you might find interesting.
I read lots and lots before I made the decision to go ahead. It's a bit scary at first so I really wanted to check I was doing the right thing.

Review: Top Site Building Money Making Package

Site Build is a very successful website build and marketing tool for making money with your own web page, one of the most successful out there. Over 100000 people have benifited from this and a lot of them got rich from this program. So, will this program be good for you? We will review the key features and components that come in the package.

Site Build It Website Building Features:

Site Build It has built-in webpage templates for your site. So you can build a website, without knowing HTML and program. All you have to do is to create content - something that you probably know about.

For example, if you are planning to open an online store for clothes and shoes, I guess you might know quite a lot about the clothes and shoes that you want to sell, and those things will be your content.

Site Build It takes care of the programming part for you. It provides the entire interface for you to input your content so that you don't need to know about those coding stuffs.
Site Build It has built in graphics tools as well, so that you can modify to make your site look customized. And when you change the graphics (on your logo or master template) ALL the pages are changed. This is a big time-saver.

Site Build It Marketing Tool Features:

Site Build It has a Keyword Research Tool that helps you the profitable keywords in your niche. This tool is very helpful, no matter you are a novice website designer or experienced webmaster.
The basics of keyword research are described in MYSS. You can do the keyword research manually, it usually will take days of work. Using Site Build It, same or better results can be achieved within minutes (better in the same that Site Build It also tells you the profitability potentials of each keyword).

The Keyword Research Tool might cost well above $200 alone by itself.
Sit Build It package includes an electronic newsletter publishing system, so that your visitors can join your mailing list. You can e-mail your visitors/clients regularly and stay in touch.
Paying for a newsletter publishing system alone could cost you about $300 per year if you buy it somewhere else as a stand-alone tool.

The autoresponder system is also included such that if someone commit a purchase on your site, she/he will get an automatic response.
Site Build It Traffic Building Features:
After you set up your site, Site Build It will submit your site to major search engines, including Google and Yahoo, among others.
It will also report to you the rankings of your webpages. If your ranking is not high (not among the top 10 pages returned by, for example, Google), Site BuildIt will analyze your webpage and tell you how to improve it.

Site Build It!

Using the search engine optimization feature offered by Site Build It, an almost computer illiterate, Karen Copeland (http://www.golf-travel-packagessouthafrica.com), achieves #1 rankings in Google for 75 of his pages, besides others in top 10.
Well, these are features I think that are important. They are also unique since usually hosting package won't have them.

Considering that a regular hosting package without these features will cost you above $200, and taking into account the fact that Site BuildIt also has unlimited storage and bandwidth, you can't lose by choosing them. In fact, you are making a smart decision if you buy Site Build It now at the price of US$299.

A final note, Site Build It comes with a 30-day money back guarantee. After the 30-day money back period, they will refund on a pro-rated basis.
In summary, I highly recommend Site build it!

Click to find out more about Site build. Be warned, this is no get rich quick scheme. You should make money quickly, but the only road to wealth is hard work.

Affiliate Program Tutorial: (Step 1-3)

This Affiliate Program Tutorial aims to give you a quick overview.
It's your road map to success as an affiliate.

I've been earning a good living from affiliate programs since 1998. Based on that experience, this tutorial tells you the 18 steps to take to generate a useful income from affiliate programs.
No tricks. No gimmicks. Just solid, reliable methods designed to work for years.
You have the choice of many different ways of earning affiliate commissions.

In my experience, you'll have your best chance of success if you do the following. Find a niche and create a useful, interesting, content-rich, keyword-rich website on one topic and weave in affiliate links and AdSense ads.

This method - with the more recent addition of AdSense ads - has worked beautifully for me since 1998.
I urge you to master this basic method. It's a bit like serving an apprenticeship.
As part of your apprenticeship you'll learn SEO (search engine optimization) skills, copywriting skills and various other Internet marketing skills which will prove to be invaluable, whatever route you choose next.

With any luck, you'll have a bit of fun, too! I do.
I include Google's AdSense in this tutorial. Strictly speaking, AdSense is an advertising network. However, in many ways it's similar to an affiliate program. I think AdSense is fantastic. It's free to join, free to use and easy to use.
It's often much easier to earn good money from AdSense than affiliate programs, so it's essential that you include AdSense in your plans.
OK. Let's get started...

STEP 1: Set a goal

If you want to go somewhere, you need to know where you're going.
Let's start with a modest goal. Say you aim to earn a total of $300 (US) a month in affiliate commissions and AdSense revenue. Imagine what you could do with that money. A holiday? A better lifestyle?
I've kept the amount low, because it's important that you believe you can do this. Achieve small successes first, see the money in your hands or in your bank account, and then increase your goals.
Perhaps you have much larger goals. That's OK. Whatever your goals, I strongly recommend that you serve your apprenticeship by taking these 18 steps. They'll give you solid knowledge and experience on which to build your affiliate business.

STEP 2: Find your niche

To help you find your niche topic, read Ken Evoy's free Affiliate Masters Course and use the excellent advice in it to find a niche that suits you and your interests.
Print out the Affiliate Masters Course, find a quiet, comfortable spot and read it several times.
Spend a lot of time thinking carefully about this and jotting down notes. You're planning a business, so don't rush it. It's very important.

You'll probably avoid Internet marketing topics because that field is so overcrowded and competitive. It's much easier to succeed if you locate a less competitive niche.
Choose a topic that is easy to write about.
Even if you've already chosen a niche, I urge you to read the Affiliate Masters Course. It might make you change your mind.
You can follow your passion or chase the money. With luck - and a bit of keyword research - you may be able to do both. I found this Affiliate money making program by searching google.

Examine your potential competitors If you're considering building a site about hiking boots, type "hiking boots" (using quotation marks) into Google and Yahoo! and carefully examine the top 10 sites which appear in the search results.
They're your real competitors. Can you create a better, more interesting, more useful site? Can you think of a new angle, a new approach? Do those top 10 sites all have high PageRank - say 6 or more? If so, you'll have to work really hard to get in the top 10.
Let's say the top 3 sites in Google are PageRank 8, 7 and 6. If so, you'll probably have to work hard for a couple of years or more to outrank them. I'm not saying it cannot be done, but it will require either a great deal of work, or a very innovative, eye-catching approach.
You can quickly check the PageRank of your potential competitors by using Seochat's free online tool - http://www.seochat.com/seo-tools/pagerank-search . Type in "hiking boots" or whatever and you'll be able to see the PageRank of the top 10 sites.
Do those sites all have the phrase in the title? (The title is the words that appear at the very top of your screen when you visit a site.) If not, you may be able to beat them. How many links do your potential competitors have?

Do your potential competitors all have thousands of links to them? This is important, because links are important to search engines. You need good, relevant links to your site. To find out how many sites are linking to a site, use the free Yahoo! Site Explorer. Go to http://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/ - and login (set up a free account if necessary).
Type the URL of the site you want to explore.
Click on "Explore URL".
Click on "Inlinks".

Modify your search to make it more useful. Select the options to show Inlinks "except from this domain" and "entire site". This will exclude internal links and show you all external links that Yahoo! knows about to ANY page of the website.
If your potential sites have thousands of links to them, they're likely to be very tough competitors.Don't decide definitely on a niche topic until you've taken the next two steps...

STEP 3. Choose a profitable niche

Do some research on Google AdWords and Wordtracker to choose the most profitable niche from among the ones you're considering. (The free trial at Wordtracker is fairly restricted. You need more than that. I find Wordtracker so useful I have an annual subscription. However, you can get a cheap one-week subscription and do an awful lot of research in one week.)Because you're planning to use AdSense, you want valuable keywords or key phrases, if possible ones that people are paying at least 50 cents per click for on Yahoo! Search Marketing and AdWords.
You're going to build a site the search engines love, so you also want to find key phrases that many people are typing into search engines. You don't rely on guesswork.
You must do this keyword research BEFORE you start building your web site. That's critically important.

Find out how much advertisers are willing to pay for the keywords or key phrases you're interested in. Here's how.
Go to https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal and play around with the free Keyword Tool.
For example, try putting in a keyword or phrase, such as "recipe" and click on "Get More Keywords". Pretend you're willing to pay the maximum per click the tool allows - 100. (You can choose any currency. I choose US.)
Over on the right side of the page, make sure that "Cost and position estimates" is selected.
The tool will calculate for you the estimated average CPC (cost per click) for a whole lot of words and phrases.
Try entering a different word, say "debt" or "free", click on "Re-calculate" and watch how the CPC changes.

You don't HAVE to choose a topic which has expensive keywords. Often topics that have expensive keywords are very competitive. You may do better choosing a less competitive niche with cheaper keywords. In July 2008, Google improved its free keyword tool, making it much more useful. It now shows you the approximate number of monthly searches done at Google for any keywords you type in. So you can now do some fast, reliable keyword research there free. So this is a very good place to start your keyword research, using real search numbers from Google. If you use Site Build It to build your site, you'll find the brainstorming tool in it awesome to help you come up with ideas and phrases you wouldn't have thought of without it.
Beware: If you choose certain topics, Google will not allow you to place AdSense ads on your site and you'll miss out on a very lucrative opportunity.

Such topics include gambling, firearms, ammunition, balisongs, butterfly knives, and brass knuckles; beer or alcohol; tobacco or tobacco-related products; and prescription drugs.
For a full list of topics you may wish to avoid see: https://www.google.com/adsense/policies?hl=en_US

Advertisers can choose to have their ads displayed only on Google or also on a large network of sites. Will AdSense ads you see on Google appear on your pages? To get an idea, find web pages that have material similar to the content you're planning to create and look at their AdSense ads.
For more accurate research, you can also use the free AdSense preview tool to see which ads are being displayed to people in different countries.

Writing reviews and doing surveys for money on Ciao

I stumbled across Ciao on a particularly productive day at work...I think I found it through a freebie site or something. I am very very broke at the moment as I have just moved to London, moving is always really expensive and London is even more expensive - especially because there are so many pubs/clubs/restaurants/gigs begging me to go to them!Ok, so Ciao is a consumer review website, that pays you to write reviews on various things.

You can write reviews on pretty much anything that you want - CD's, DVD's, Electrical Goods, even on what you do during a normal day (a challenge), some even submit their own poetry. How to start earning money:To start writing reviews and get paid some pennies you need to become a member, this is a really quick and easy process, you put in a couple of details and then are sent an email with a link to confirm that you really want to join - then done! Now you have become a member you are entitled to write reviews on what ever you want, you can tick a couple of boxes on your profile so that you can get sent email surveys (which also earn you money), have access to a guestbook so that other members can leave you messages/advice and you can even link your ebay auctions to Ciao so that other members can view them too.

Writing your first review:

Once you have found something that you want to write about, you can begin writing a review. There is a list of links down the far right handside of the page, under the Community Section you will find a link saying write a review. I would definately reccomend reading other reviews to see how they scored, so you know what sort of quality the readers expect. The format is quite easy to follow, quick blurb on advantages, disadvantages, a title & then write away. At the bottom of the page there are a couple of drop down boxes asking you to rate whatever it is you are reviewing (normally from outstanding to pants (pants is my word not theirs!)).

Earning money for reviews:
To earn any money for any of your reviews, other users will have to have rated your review in one of the top three categories (helpful, very helpful or exceptional). Each category of review gets given a certain amount, so helpful is 0.5p, very helpful is 1p and exceptional is 2p. Your earnings are calculated by multiplying the number of helpful's by the number of people who have voted them helpful so if you have 4 people who thought your review was helpful then you get 2p.

More ways of earning money:
As I mentioned earlier you can take part in surveys, and earn more money. I have followed all the instructions, and checked all the right boxes and filled in my profile, but I still have not recieved a survey :(There is another link to earn money called "Ciao Plus Offers" and the page has links to other sites where you can enter surveys and earn money or do some form of online dating and earn money.Website in general:Overall the website is very nicely laid out, easy to use, clean and simple looking. The basic search functions seem to work well. There seem to be a couple of ways to search, you can do a specific search, using the "Product Search" bar or you can use the little tabs that run across the top of the page to take you to specific categories and then browse from there. The search functions seem to work pretty well and efficiently, you do have to scroll through a number of sponsored links before you get to the Ciao reviews, but this isn't a problem at all really.Along the top right hand corner of the page are the links that I find most useful, links to "My Ciao" from here you can view your personal information, view your account (see how much money you are making), create a personal homepage, view the reviews you have written and see how they are doing, statistics (view the number of ratings you have given, have been given), a list of your buddies (people who are in your circle of trust) your guestbook (where other members can leave you messages) and finally view your ebay auctions that you have listed via Ciao.

The "My Ciao" page is simple to use and arranged in tabs again (click the tab of the information that you want to view), and I found as a new user quite easy to navigate. As I used the site a bit more, I began to get a bit frustrated with it, it was quite difficult to find out how to do things, such as editing your review (a friendly member left me a message in my guestbook telling me how), which was a small link down the side of the page...I have found the site a little conveluted and all the important links seem to be in tiny writing down the side of my page, in general if you are searching for information it is quick and easy to use, but if you are a member trying to do things it is not that clear or easy to use.Other Members & Feeling of Site:I have found that most of the members are quite friendly and helpful and leave suggestions in the comments section of reviews to help you to improve your writing. Although I have found that a lot of the members are quite harsh in the messages that they leave so these really need to be taken with a pinch of salt. I have found it extreamly difficult to get any rating over a helpful on this site, even though the same review has been well recieved on DooYoo.

A lot of the members are really critical and a little too anal for my liking. Although there have been quite a few people who have been really nice & helpful (have noticed that they are members of DooYoo too) more often than not the other members are quite cutting with their comments and almost snobbish about it all - there is constructive critisism and just plain critisim. There are a lot of members (more so than DooYoo) so in theory you should be able to earn quite a bit just by the laws of maths - more people read your reviews, more people rate your reviews, therefore more money to you!

Parting Words:
Although in theory a really good site, it works well, is efficient, all the reviews on the site are of a really high level (this is because of the tough paying out system), so this is a great site if you want a good review on a product.

“"The $60,000 question: What makes some affiliates earn thousands when other people struggle to earn hundreds? I was asked this question and it made me revisit some of the main keys to success with affiliate marketing... "”

The $60,000 question:
What makes some affiliates earn thousands when other people struggle to earn hundreds? There is absolutely nothing wrong with making $100 to $300 a month extra on the side. But wouldn't it be better to make 10 to 20 times that amount? Before we start, let me tell you the way it is:Everybody can't make $5,000 to $10,000 a month doing affiliate marketing. There is too much competition. There is no easy money that will fall into your lap without you doing anything. (And in case there was any easy money I would keep that information to myself and not write it in an article read by thousands of people.)You will find the best working affiliate opportunities only by finding them yourself, either through testing and research or networking and business development. With all this said, let me give you the three high-level keys to making money with affiliate programs on the Internet.

1. Google and Overture rock! The days of free traffic are not completely over, but certainly fading away at a rapid pace. Sure, you can work hard to create pages that score high in the search engines and build sweat equity into a site. But by paying for clicks and focusing on Google and Overture you will have the top three positions on all search engines that really count on the Internet.

If you want to generate traffic from Yahoo, you need to be on top of Google, it's as simple as that. Overture and especially Google are the best key drivers of qualified traffic on the Internet. Pay-per-click search engines let you quickly test different affiliate offers and new landing pages on your site. When it works, you can scale. Stay away from top competitive keywords for $1 to $2 per click. Niche marketing on Overture and Google works.

2. Do you have your own email list yet?Sending offers to your own email list is the true way to build freedom and residual income. Instead of just sending traffic away and hoping for the best, you should have your own email list to which you can send multiple offers.Use subscription forms on your web site.Use co-registrations or co-op marketing campaigns.
Buy email lists.

3. Consider starting your own affiliate program and/or your own unique offer. If you know that each filled out form on your web site generates $0.50 in revenue, would you be willing to pay someone else $0.25 to generate that lead?

Probably the most overlooked way of generating traffic is to have other people generate it for you. The only thing you need is a destination site that is profitable. It can even be with other affiliate programs as the back-end.Identify companies that pay well for co-registration leads and bundle 3-4 offers together with your own subscription form (for your own email list, remember?).Find a successful company and recruit new affiliates for them and make a commission on their sales. Brokering deals (unique deals) can make you quite an income. The bottom line:What do all these three techniques have in common? It involves paying for traffic in one shape or another. To accelerate your income, you need to invest smartly in advertising. Spend limited amounts of money to test offers. When you find something that works - scale it. And repeat.
To your success!

How to make big money as an affiliate

Some affiliates make huge profits - we're talking millions of dollars in a year. It's a fact. People don't know this. Affiliate marketing is a new line of business, and it has great unexploited potential.

“"In the poker niche, some poker sites pay you $300 for each player you recruit. Mortgage institutions may pay $75 for every lead, that is, your visitor doesn't even have to take a loan for you to get paid."”

Gigantic marketplace at your reach
The internet as a marketplace is huge, and still it lies waiting in your computer. If you can reach just a tiny fraction of the world's web visitors, you may see life-changing money rolling into your affiliate account.
Amazing but true!
No automatic success
Now, don't quit your day job! Not every affiliate business is successful. Making a lot of money is never easy, plenty of hard work is required. Persistency, ambition, maybe a certain talent. Good ideas will help.

But people live from their affiliate businesses, and some affiliates are extremely successful. The people behind this site have been extremely successful. In this article we'll show you how to make your affiliate business boom.

How it works
Starting up an affiliate business is very easy:
Build a site, if you don't already have one.
Sign up with a few profitable affiliate programs that are related to your site.
Link to the affiliate programs from your site using your personal tracking links.
Generate traffic to your site
Make your visitors want to buy the products of the affiliate programs.
That's it. If you can do this, your visitors will click on the links and purchase products from the affiliate programs - and the commission goes right into your affiliate account.

How to find the best affiliate programs
Joining affiliate programs is cost-free, and you can use our site to find the programs that are best for your business. We provide you with updated lists of the top affiliate programs in each niche, with their respective advantages.

The most profitable affiliate markets
According to our experience, the biggest paychecks are delivered to affiliates in the following affiliate markets:
In the poker niche, some poker sites pay you $300 CPA for each player you recruit. Mortgage institutions may pay $75 for every lead, that is, your visitor doesn't even have to take a loan for you to get paid.

Merchants in these areas early realized the gain in paying others to do their marketing. Very high commissions have attracted lots of affiliates, and they have been very successful.
Sounds tempting? Check out our toplists, affiliate programs and reviews in the mortgage and education segments!

Tough competition in lucrative niches
If you don't have a site, you need to decide which niche to work in. Choosing a niche involves several questions, such as which niche offers the biggest potential profits and which area you're genuinely interested in.

Some affiliate markets turn over really big money, while others are much smaller. Making big money in a small niche isn't a given, of course. On the other hand, very lucrative niches come with very hard competition.

Finding the most profitable niche might require pretty deep considerations. Some successful affiliates did put huge efforts into this analysis before even starting up (or buying) their site.
Again, if you plan to start up small or if you already have a site, finding good affiliate programs is easy using our toplists and reviews.

What makes you tick?
Don't close your eyes to the importance of personal motivation. When the workload is huge and success comes in very small chunks, working in an area that you care for makes a difference. For most of us, love of money isn't the prime mover.
It's easier to promote things that you like.
Primary success factors - things you must do

Build a good site
Your site is your tool. When a person enters a site, you have only a couple of seconds to catch her. The site must be well organized and have the right look and feel in order to make visitors stay and take action.
Make sure that your site leads the visitors to the Buy button without hassle. Invite them to take action (such as making a purchase), and don't let them off the hook once you have their interest. This is called conversion.
Taking action must be easy!
Create great content
Good looks aren't enough. For your site to generate income, it needs to accomplish two things:
Attract a lot of visitors (traffic)
Make visitors purchase (conversion)
This is primarily done by filling your site with really good content and good usability. It should be relevant for the visitors, and it should encourage them to purchase from your merchants (marketing).

Search engine optimization
If you have chosen to attract mainly organic traffic, that is, through the search engines, the content also needs to be search engine optimized (SEO).

Rule the net with good SEO copy
Search engines pay more and more attention to text quality. Relevant and well-written text doesn't only wins your readers' heart, it helps you rank in Google and drives traffic to your site.
Write for your readers - and for Google. It's called SEO copy.

Advertise and build traffic
Another way of attracting traffic is by paid ads and links. The main arena for this is called PPC (pay per click). You place an ad on another site and pays a small amount each time a visitor clicks on your ad. Learn more about Adwords PPC advertising!

The biggest PPC market for affiliates today is Google Adwords. You decide how much you're willing to pay for each click and set a cap for your total spending - so there's no risk for cost explosions. Some web hosts give away free Adwords checks when you place your site with them.
Notice that affiliate programs often limit where and how you're allowed to advertise their products - they don't want you to interfere with their own advertising.

Buying a site vs starting from scratch
For private persons and small businesses, the easiest and least expensive way to start a new affiliate business is to set up a new domain and build a site from scratch. It requires time and effort, but your capital investment can be close to zero.

If you have some resources and want things to happen fast, consider buying an existing site. Old sites may have a built-in credential with the search engines (page rank), and they may even have some traffic already. With the right actions, you can get an old site up in speed very fast.

Give luck a chance
So, that's the short version of how to make big money as an affiliate. Successful affiliates can lead very nice lives, with lots of personal freedom and job satisfaction. Anyone with internet access can try their luck as an affiliate, but of course success is never certain.
One thing is certain though: you cannot succeed if you don't try.
Trying is easy, and it costs almost nothing. If you try and fail, what's the worst that can happen? This list shows the consequences of the worst case scenario:
Nothing happens
As you can see, this is pretty much the same as if you don't try =)

How to make big money online (Part 5 of 102 Ways to make money online)

This is the final part (5) of the article: 102 ways to make money online.

Big bucks

76. While most webmasters use PPC to refer to Pay Per Click old timers use it jokingly to refer to P*rn (where *=o), Pills and Casinos. Those are probably the three biggest money areas on the net and have probably made more millionaires than any others. But they are very competitive and are difficult markets to er, penetrate. However, there are lots of legal, legitimate opportunities here some of which I'll expand on in due course.

77. Example of a pure arbitrage opportunity: For a while buying traffic via Google Adwords and sending that traffic to pages of little content and Google Adsense ads generated reasonable profits when done astutely. Sure, Adwords and Adsense are two sites of the same coin. But I did say you needed to be astute to recognise where the opportunities were and you need to test, test, test. There are still lots of contextual arbitrage opportunities about. Especially when you work across programs (e.g., buy traffic from MSN, sell to Yahoo).

78. There are a lot of arbitrage opportunities in the finance world as discussed below but if economics and finance talk bores you to death, there's sports arbitrage. Different online bookmakers may offer different odds on a sporting event. By taking the better odds at each bookie you could come out ahead irrespective of the actual outcome of the event. If you're really clever you could make a program to do this for you. Why don't the bookies adjust their odds based on what their competitors are offering? Because they have to balance their own books. Their prices are decided based on how their own punters are betting.

79. Hosting: You don't need to buy a lot of server hardware to provide a web hosting service. Many big hosting companies allow "reseller" accounts where you sell hosting plans to customers and the hosting company will host them all for you under your Reseller account umbrella. You get to charge customers as much as you want. Some Resellers provide value added services and charge more for these. At places like WHT you'll find that resellers sometimes sell their customers as a "bundle" i.e., you can pay some money to buy a reseller "business".

80. Related to the above is free hosting where you provide small website owners free hosting and in exchange you serve ads to all their pages to make the revenue to pay the hosting company and yourself. Early pioneers of this model are well known names like Geocities and Angelfire.

81. Being a broker can be done in a thousand different ways. There are some entrepreneurs making healthy profits just by bidding for projects on places like elance and guru (and others) and farming them out to a bank of writers/programmers they use on a regular basis.

82. Trading from home is really catching on in many parts of the world. You don't need to be an expert on stocks & shares. You can trade on commodities, currencies, lots more. Trading futures allows you to leverage even small $100 amounts of capital into huge fortunes (or bankruptcy).

83. Gambling is a far cry from trading futures but a route to riches for many. No, not the traditional horse racing type of gambling where the only long term winner is the bookmaker. I'm talking gambling against other gamblers, I'm talking the numerous ways of gambling online (search). And there are a million books and ebooks that claim to "teach you how to win".

84. HYIP, or High Yield Investment Programs are just what they say on the tin. They are also highly risky. You invests your money and you takes a chance, but some pay as much as 100% per day. How do they do it? A very few are putting your money into investments with even better rates of return. Others are simply going to keep paying out the first few customers with investments collected from later ones.... and then they go bust. Pyramid style. Maybe the ones who make the money are the ones who get in early... or actually start HYIP programs.
eBay/Amazon etc.

85. What's it with eBay? You just can't get away from them. Their bulk "dictionary purchase" of ad terms from the Google Adwords/Adsense system means you find ads for eBay no matter what you're looking for, even if it's for toenail clippings or dead pets. Whatever the reason for their success you can join the bandwagon and sell your rubbish on eBay and convert a garage of old junk to hard cash.

86. And when you've acquired a fair amount of experience with selling your own rubbish, start selling others' rubbish. How to get your hands on enough trash? Place an ad in your local paper to do house clearances, or just buy stock from wholesalers in - yes, you guessed it - eBay itself. You can get anything from unused toasters to umbilical cord containers. A lot of ebay sellers are actually shopkeepers; they buy stock new from wholesalers and sell them in eBay instead of a physical bricks and mortar shop... and make a healthy living doing so.

87. You've now got a lot of experience buying and selling in eBay. It's time to write a book or ebook on how to use ebay to generate millions. It doesn't matter that you haven't made millions yourself. People still buy these books even if it's just to learn their way about ebay which can be quite daunting for some. And you can sell it on ... you guessed!

88. Don't fancy writing? Then set yourself up as an eBay assistant. eBay itself will send you people who need help with their complicated system. And you can charge them a commission.

89. Alternatively, setup a shop to accept goods from those who can't list them themselves. Yes, a physical shop. There are lots of them springing up all in big cities. The operation is simple. You take something in from somebody, sell it on ebay and retain a percentage for all your efforts.

90. Think building an ebay business is too much like building a normal business? If you've got the capital you can take the easy route. A lot of ebay "shop" (businesses) come up for sale in site-for-sale forums and with business brokers. The ebay username and feedback generally accompanies the business so you continue to benefit from accumulated goodwill (though the "transfer" is something that eBay may not approve of).

91. Opportunities to make money in eBay are limited only by your imagination. There's money in everything from making connections (putting people in touch with other people) to coming up with or commissioning software to make the average ebayer's life simpler or more productive (thousands of such programs already exist). There's even a business model involving just searching for and finding items that have been misspelt in the listings.

92. It's not just eBay. Any merchant big enough or third party affiliate manager program - from Commission Junction to Clickbank - has opportunities. For example, you can create an Amazon affiliate site.

93. Set up a proxy (example). People seem to want to surf at work AND access sites their IT system blocks them from viewing. A proxy allows them to get around that restriction. Some proxy services get by just on the advertising (as it's easy to get enormous page views in the proxy business). A very good one will even have people paying a few dollars each. There are several ways to monetise a proxy.

94. Enjoy networking? Social networking Web 2.0 style? Make money with it. If you build up sufficient reputation in places like Digg people will start approaching you to start some buzz on their company or their new product. At one point Netscape offered top "Diggers" a sweetener os $1,000 to move over to their competing service.

95. Selling databases of parts/directory listings/modified or value added DMOZ data/ email lists. The DMOZ directory is a massive directory put together by volunteer editors. And they give away their content for free. Kind of. You can download their database and combine it with other information - like phone number and postcode from Yellow pages- to add value / enhance those listings. You could then sell the enhanced product.

96. Find jobs for your friends. An easy way into the personal recruitment business. Know a friend who's just right for a particular job? Make the connection between friend and employer and you could get up to $5,000 for a few hours work.

97. Get paid for your unused computer cycles. Is your computer sometimes on while you aren't actually sitting at it? Then it's using electricity but not performing "work". Joining a distributed computing group like SETI lets you use that computing power to help reach some worthy/unworthy goal. However, you can also

98. Take the cap around: Do something nice. Provide some information that helps someone, perhaps someone grieving for a lost partner. Or info on how to volunteer to help orphans in Africa, or find an internship. Make it useful. Or just make it very funny. Then stick a donation button on there for people to support your work. You'll be surprised at how well a donation button works on the right type of site. No, it won't work on this page - or any page promising to make you a millionaire.

99. Start an

article directory. Giving away free articles (with embedded links) is one way for webmasters to build incoming links to their sites. For other webmasters these free articles are a great way to fill out their otherwise bare sites. Be the middleman. Popular article directories make a lot of money from the contextual ads they post on all the free articles they are displaying on their site.

100. Start a content site: The most common way webmasters earn money is probably contextual programs like YPN and Adsonar. But mainly Adsense. It's simple, quick, doesn't involve any complicated new skills. You simply put up a website with useful/informative content and some Google provided code, get a few links to the page and wait. Traffic will start flowing to it. The volume would depend on the topic and quality of content. Visitors would see ads served by Google and related to the content of the page. Each time they click on an ad you get anywhere from a few cents to several dollars. I personally know at least 20 webmasters who earn in excess of $10,000 per month this way. There are thousands of others.

101. Virtual Assistant opportunities: A VA is described as an independent entrepreneur providing administrative, creative and/or technical services from the comfort of their own homes/home-offices. There are several organisations on the web catering for and advising VAs. Like this one. And work seems to be plentiful.

The 102nd method is my personal favourite because I find it hilarious:
There was this bloke who bought an email list of one million email addresses. He sent half of them a stock tip that a certain stock was going up, the other half got the same message predicting that the stock would go down. 50% of them saw him proved right. He ignored the rest and split this 50% into two groups. Half got an email with another up prediction and the other half got the same email with a down prediction. He rinsed and repeated a few times till he was left with about 15,000 people who saw him get it right several times in a row. They were obviously very impressed. He then invited them to pay $5,000 each for a seminar with him on picking stocks! :)

I make a healthy living online, and with multiple income streams (no I won't tell you how much. Remember, I'm not trying to sell you anything). I put this article together originally because friends and family kept harassing me to show them what I did for a living so they could do it too. I collected some of the ideas for things I had done myself, got some more from the thousands of site-for-sale threads (and detailed conversations I've had with those sellers), and threw some more obscure/zany ones in here for good measure.

May money just flow to you. If finances are tight right now, take heart - money happens, it's easier than you think. I feel very privileged to live in these interesting times, times full of opportunity, times where I've been able to give up my day job, work at my leisure, enjoy my kids growing up, retire decades earlier than I normally would, and spend time writing this drivel instead of running the usual rat race. God bless the Internet and Good Luck. You CAN do it.

Crooked ways to make money online (Part 4 of 102 Ways to make money online)

This article is part 4 of 102 ways to make money on the internet.

It smells...

No, I'm not endorsing any of the plans in this section but this article wouldn't be complete without mentioning these unmentionables.

65. Has someone has violated your online rights? Perhaps they don't have a privacy page on their site as required by law. Or haven't made their site disabled friendly (illegal in some parts of the world). Sue them. Particularly if you can get one of those no win-no fee vultures to act for you. A guy called André-Tascha Lammé kept getting calls from salesmen selling him stuff. He sued them in the Sacramento, CA, small claims court (easy to do). Guess what? Apparently the law in the US awards you $500 each time a telesales person makes an unwanted call to you. Lammé walked away with $6,000. What's the law where you are?

66. They haven't violated your rights? Sue them anyway. Why do you think so many people sue Google on the most unlikely pretexts: giving them incorrect results, showing anti-Christian sites in the results, having advertising, being racist, not being racist? Find something unusual enough to 1, 2, 3.

68. Perform domain hunting services for businesses and then send bill them (even if they've never heard of you). Some businesses will pay up. A 0.01% success out of a million could be worth $100,000 (at a modest $10 each). For example, you could setup a program to extract company names from a Yellowpages database, run them through a misspelling generator and automail each company a list of domains you've identified that it would be in their interest to register as these are very similar to their company name. That's a service, right? The UK authorities have been clamping down on a lot of these operators... but that's only the UK based ones!

69. Exploit people's soppiness. Once upon a time there was a site with lots of lovely pictures of a beautiful little bunny who was very, very happy. And his owner loved him very much. But he needed money so he asked for money on the site and promised that if he did not reach his target he'd eat the bunny. He provided graphic recipes with bunny dish mock-up pictures. Donations followed, fast and swift.

70. Relationship Marketing: Who said relationship marketing was about companies building relationships with their customers? It's about marketing to relatives. About pimping products to your friends. Whatever the "network marketing" opportunities there ever were offline - from Amway to selling water filters - there's always a lot of stuff you can "personally recommend" to your friends online. People who don't open junk mail will open mail from you, because they trust you! And you can get paid for endorsing all manner of rubbish. (Till you lose all your friends, of course)

71. Become a volunteer editor in places like DMOZ and then take bribes to list sites. Is it illegal? In many parts of the world it probably is not, and so it does happen a fair bit. But, the less said about this bribery the better..

72. Petitions: People are constantly petitioning their bosses, their politicians, the rest of the world. Some of those petitioners pay for people to join their cause. Signing up again and again and again has proven lucrative for some, particularly those who know how to proxify their IPs (what is a proxy?).

73. Email SPAM. Nobody likes it, it's illegal in some countries, ISPs get very upset, recipients get even more upset but no list of how people make money online can be complete without a mention of this. What do you sell when you spam? Have a look at what type of spam YOU are getting, it will likely give you an idea of what pays. And the stock tips that seem to "accidentally" land in your inbox. But that's about all the help I'm giving you on the subject.

74. (But wherever there's a big problem there's an opportunity: Run an free email service like Hotmail etc., but with a good SPAM filtering system. High startup costs, sure, but if you get enough people signing up you could be worth a few million very quickly. Google tried this with gmail and got about 4% of the market without advertising the service at all; accounts were given by invitation only)
